About Atago Shrine
Atago Shrine sits atop Mount Atago, the highest peak in Kyoto (924m). It is the head shrine of nearly 900 Atago shrines across Japan, dedicated to the deity of fire protection. The pilgrimage to the summit involves a grueling hike of over 4,000 steps through ancient cedar forests. Historically a center for Shugendo mountain asceticism, it remains a vital spiritual site where locals hike to obtain the 'hinoyojin' (beware of fire) talisman for their kitchens.
